Antique Brass Bound Camphor Wood Lined Teak Trunk c.1870s

A 19th century campaign storage chest made from camphorwood and lined in teak, with brass corners and handles.

Campaign trunks and chests were used by British Army Officers during the 18th and 19th century.

They were designed to be packed and carried on the march so needed to be supremely practical and durable. They also had to be stylish and elegant, in keeping with their owners' high social position. As a result, campaign furniture usually featured distinctive brass corners, handles and strap work, for protection as well as decoration.

Most of the earlier pieces were bespoke made to order by local cabinet makers for soldiers, administrators and colonists setting out for India. Demand grew steeply during the 19th century, not just to serve Empire-goers but thanks to a growing appreciation in the domestic setting.

Today campaign furniture is increasingly popular in hotels, retail outlets and homes for being evocative of luxurious travel and a time gone by.
